Jesus explained it this way in John 3:3-7:
“I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born-again.” How can a man be born when he is old? Nicodemus asked. Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born! Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” All Christians are “born-again” whether they use that term or not. See, we were born spiritually dead to God and that is why we need to be “born-again”, simply put spiritually alive to God in Christ Jesus. There are not two kinds of Christians, you either are one or you aren’t. Going to church, being raised in a Christian or religious family, being a nice or good person, and believing in God does not make someone a Christian. Christian means “Christ-one” or belonging to Christ, being a sincere believer in Him, being “born-again”. A Christian is a person who has accepted Jesus Christ into their life and heart as their personal Savior and Lord.
